Battles Play of the Season Winner Announced

Bluegrass Cellular announced today that the Monroe County Falcons are the recipients of a $1,000 donation for winning the Battles in the Bluegrass “Play of the Season” contest.

Battles in the Bluegrass is a high school sports program that features rivalry games in central Kentucky. During the season, football fans logged on to http://www.battlesinthebluegrass.com to preview match ups, including video interviews with coaches.

When the Battles season ended, Bluegrass Cellular asked the community to visit the website and place their vote for Play of the Season among plays from eight teams that participated in the 2012 Battles in the Bluegrass football season. Voting opened on Wednesday, October 17 and ended on Friday, October 26.

“We are thrilled to be the winners of Bluegrass Cellular’s Battles in the Bluegrass,” said Dwayne Murray, Athletic Director at Monroe County High School. “We are grateful for companies like Bluegrass Cellular that give back to the local community, and we would like to thank our students, faculty and staff, and our fans for supporting us.”

The winning play, which garnered 80 percent of the total votes, occurred during Monroe County’s game against Warren East High School on August 31, 2012 when senior quarterback, Chad Wilson, kept the option handoff and eluded a defender for a big gain.

“We are happy to make this donation to Monroe County High School,” said Barry Nothstine, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Bluegrass Cellular. “The Monroe County community demonstrated their passion for their local high school and cast an impressive amount of votes. We congratulate the Falcons and thank all of the schools for participating.”

Seven other schools were in the running for Play of the Season, including Butler County High School, Grayson County High School, Green County High School, LaRue County High School, North Laurel High School, Southwestern High School, and Warren East High School.

To kick off the 2012 football season in August, Bluegrass Cellular enlisted the help of Brandon Deaderick, Elizabethtown High School graduate and defensive end for the New England Patriots. Deaderick talked about the excitement of rivalry games and the importance of fan support in a video posted on http://www.BattlesintheBluegrass.com .

Battles in the Bluegrass, which launched in October 2010, is part of Bluegrass Cellular’s ongoing support of community high school athletics. The company will continue the program with the 2012 high school basketball season this winter.
